The Cherry Blossoms Are in Full Bloom at The Alnwick Garden – Don’t Miss It

The Alnwick Garden Cherry Blossom experience Northumberland Living

We’ve just been to see the cherry blossoms at The Alnwick Garden, and honestly, we can’t stop thinking about it. All 329 Taihaku cherry trees are now in full bloom and it’s one of the most stunning things we’ve ever seen.

If you're staying with us soon – or even just thinking about booking a spring break – this is the time to come. The trees only stay in bloom for a couple of weeks, and it’s one of those “you have to see it in person” kind of moments. You walk through the orchard and it feels like you’re in a completely different world – petals gently falling like snow, huge white blossoms everywhere, and this peaceful atmosphere that just makes you want to slow down and take it all in.

We’ve been a few times before, but it still takes your breath away. And the best part? It’s right on the doorstep – just a short drive from all of our Northumberland Luxury Stays homes. Whether you’re in The Galloway, The Shearling, or The Newland, you can be there in under 10 minutes.

We had a slow wander through the orchard, took about a million photos, and then just sat on one of the benches for a bit, soaking it all in. You don’t need to be into gardening to appreciate it – it’s just one of those places that makes you feel calm and grounded. There were families, couples, solo visitors… and a lot of people (us included) saying “wow” every few minutes.

If you’re planning a chilled-out stay, we’d really recommend heading there for a few hours. Grab a coffee at the café, explore the rest of the gardens, and enjoy something you won’t find anywhere else in the UK – it’s actually the largest collection of Taihaku cherry trees in the world.

But it’s not just about the blossom.

The Alnwick Garden is packed with other things to do, especially if you’re visiting with kids or looking for a full day out. After the orchard, we wandered through the Poison Garden (yep, a garden full of poisonous plants – sounds weird, but it’s super interesting), then watched the water displays at the Grand Cascade. The way the fountains are timed to music and lights is brilliant – and the kids loved it.

There’s also the Bamboo Labyrinth, Rose Garden, and the Treehouse Restaurant, which is like something out of a fairytale. If you’re after something a bit quirky, you can even book into one of their special events – they’ve always got things going on throughout the year. In spring and summer, there are regular children’s activities, storytelling sessions, art workshops, and outdoor performances.

Coming up soon, they’ve got:

  • Spring Garden Trails and activities for little ones

  • A packed Easter programme with crafts and interactive fun

  • The Summer Outdoor Theatre series (keep an eye out for ticket announcements)

We always keep an eye on what’s happening there, because it’s such a lovely add-on to your stay. Whether you're staying for a weekend or making a longer holiday of it, Alnwick Garden offers a brilliant way to enjoy Northumberland’s scenery, culture, and charm.

We’ve added a little guide to the garden in your welcome packs, with directions and tips for visiting. And if you’re heading there for the cherry blossom, don’t wait too long – they really don’t last very long, and this week is peak bloom.

To us, this is what Northumberland Living is all about – slow mornings, stunning views, places that make you stop and say, “I’m so glad we came.” If you’re looking for a relaxing break with a bit of wow-factor, this is a perfect excuse to book. And when you’re done exploring the gardens, you can come back to your private hot tub, pour a drink, and look back on a day well spent.

If you’ve already booked with us – amazing, you’re in for a treat. If not, we’ve still got some spring availability left, but not for long. Drop us a message if you need help picking the right home, or if you just want some local tips – we’re always happy to help.

And if you do go to the garden, don’t forget to tag us in your photos. We love seeing what our guests get up to while they’re here!
